Internship Program

Description

The office offers an exciting and varied internship experience to energetic and motivated law students with an interest in the legislative process. Depending on the semester, interns may experience a wide range of unique and rewarding experiences including the following:

  • Legislative bill drafting;

  • Researching state law;

  • Meetings with legislators and lobbyists;

  • Staffing legislative committee hearings during session or interim committee hearings during the interim for the office;

  • Preparation of official annotations to Colorado appellate opinions;

  • General legal research,

  • Review of executive agency rules for compliance with state and federal law and much more.

The internship program is strictly a "for-credit" opportunity. Interns are not paid for their experience at the office. The actual number of volunteer hours will be negotiated between the intern and the intern's mentor; however, a minimum of twelve hours per week is required to insure a rewarding experience for the intern.

Qualifications

The office seeks a motivated student who possesses strong writing skills and excellent people skills. The intern candidate should be a team worker, a quick learner, and flexible. The office will consider any second or third year law student, placing more emphasis on the individual's skills, qualities, and enthusiasm. Having completed a legislative drafting course or a legislative process course benefits a candidate but is not required.

Application Process

Interested applicants should send a cover letter, resume, and writing sample to the OLLS Intern Coordinator. The cover letter should state which semester the applicant wishes to intern.

  • Fall Semester: Application deadline is July 1.

  • Spring Semester: Application deadline is October 15.
