House Overview

There are 65 elected legislators in the House. Traditionally the Democrat legislators are seated on the North side of the center aisle, the Republican legislators on the South side. Since the center aisle evenly divides the chamber seating, members of the Majority party will occupy some of the desks in the back rows on the opposite side.  The Speaker will assign a seat for an unaffiliated legislator.

The Representatives vote electronically.  Their votes are displayed on the screens located on both sides of the Chamber.  Representatives vote by pushing the green (yes) or red (no) buttons located on their desks.  The white button is used to page a clerk for assistance.

Only Representatives may walk in the center aisle and the “well” (the space between the front desk and the legislators’ desks).

No one other than a Representative may occupy the chair or use the desk of a Representative.

Lobbying is not permitted in the House chamber.

Those permitted on the floor during session include:
    •    Members of the House of Representatives
    •    Members of the Senate
    •    Legislative staff
    •    Accredited members of the news media
    •    Invited guests of a Representative are seated along the sides of the Chamber
